The Pleasures of Soldiering.
Rather an amusing scene took place on the Queen's Wharf on Tuesday evening — a short time before the sailing of the (war-ship) Wanganui. A crowd had assembled to witness the departure of Major Von Tempsky, and the nucleus of his little band; when one of the assemblage appeared evidently struck with military ardour ... volunteered to join.
On his desires being made known to the Major, the young man's aspirant to military glories was examined — found to be a stalwart; the young man, consequently was en-listed on the spot.
The young recruit, who had in his pocket the key of his master's premises, at once threw it on to the wharf, saying ... 'Here, take this key to Mr____ ' and jumped on board the Wanganui.
